Before Death: Part Two, Chapter 1: The Truth About Eve, Part I

Eve was a victim of circumstance really. Thrust into a never-ending battle for destiny, she was created to do exactly what she did--nevertheless, Lilith loved her.

She saw her as a younger sister, by rite instead of birth, because she understood that Eve would never satisfy Him completely. There was simply just no way because Eve refused to wake up if it meant she had to let Him go. Eve would sew her eyelids shut to spite her face if it meant she could feel Adam, and God for that matter, would need her. What she failed to realize was that was because she was--by design--a living, breathing, willing sacrifice. And in order to complete the rite, something, or better yet someone, needed to be willing to be sacrificed.

From the moment Eve met Lilith in the Oasis she knew she wanted to hold onto Adam no matter what. The serpent was testing her loyalty, and although tempting as it was to consider, the last thing she wanted was her eyes to be opened if that meant she would be destined to be alone. That's why she brought him the fruit. If her soul could be awakened to reality, when he ate of the fruit he would be able to see her truth, too, and they'd figure out a way to make it work together. She was his rib, after all. It had to be. This couldn't have been for nothing...

The morning after their expulsion from the Oasis, Adam and Eve did not speak. She didn't know what to say, and he already openly blamed her for everything.

"The woman you gave me," he'd said. The woman you gave me?! She spat in her brain. He made it sound like he got a bad taste in his mouth at the thought of her. Like he wanted nothing to do with her. While they stood before God he hadn't even looked at her.  That was not what was supposed to happen. She needed to find that serpent.

She busied herself by searching for food. The topography of the land was completely different from the lush, flourishing sanctuary they inhabited before. It was hot. And dry. The sun beat down on her back like a relentless adversary hellbent on ensuring she knew it was present, unacknowledged, and unhappy.

"What I would give to sit beneath the canopy of lush palm trees," she muttered under her breath. "The shade was cooling and if trees are present, that usually means that water is nearby." She wiped her brow with her arm and felt the cooling burn of the sweat on her skin. She'd never seen water come through her skin like that before. It fascinated her, but there was no time to truly consider it. She was determined to find food, which meant she needed to search for hydration. Maybe if they found a water source they could cool off, have a conversation, and consider building somewhere to settle.

Yeah. I'll earn his forgiveness, she thought.
